Reading in Cyberspace ?!?

1. What effect will this library-based digitization have on Google’s relationships with publishers?

I think smart publishers are taking advantage of this new database. Just think, who ever goes to the library anymore? A lot less people. You don’t need to think about it to answer that question ever since the Internet became increasingly more popular. So now people are no longer depending on libraries as a primary source of information, publishers should be worrying about the future of books, the future of their company. What’s better than to take advantage of this new way of research, the Internet, and combine it with books? The people sueing Google just really want money, a piece of Google’s profit. In long term, they will suffer more if Google Book Search does close down.

2. How have Google’s competitors, such as Yahoo! or Microsoft, respond to this challenge?

The most simple way to fight competitors is to fight fire with fire. Yahoo! and Microsoft both are trying to make their own book database to not fall behind.

3. What impact could this project have on the access to information?

This project is like bringing the world libraries together into one. It would be a lot easier find the right book you are looking for. To make a long answer short, information on books would be much more accessable.

4.Will librarians be threatened by the new development?

I personally think that it would bring a whole new life in libraries. People would know exactly which book is right for them using Google Book Search and will be happy to get reliable information on exactly what they want right away. Speed and efficiency is what most people want these days and Google Book Search is just the thing to help libraries go faster.

5. What do you think?

Google Book Search might be useful to quickly find reliable information since most websites are not trustworthy. It will keep books alive for a while during the electronic era. I always like reading off things that require no electricity or power and you can carry it anywhere you want.

I agree with your comments. This new program by Google would allow users to find books easier. We have to take advantage of the technology we currently have and make most use of it. Good job!
