With the GOOD, comes the BAD

Journal Entry Question for Grade 10 #1

Many modern technologies make a big change to our lifestyles. Mostly they are made for a good reason but everything also has a negative side. Cell phones were in existence for almost a hundred years and our lives will never be the same. Cell phones today are small and affordable for most families. They are used to contact other people in a touch of a button. They are used to call for help when needed, helping or even saving people’s lives. Some even work as portable cameras, music players or other extra functions. Well, nothing comes without a cost. Cell phone fees could be quite high depending on what you buy. Most are limited by the number of minutes and calls you make. For those who use cell phones a lot, they could be a big distraction, especially when the person is driving. Talking on cell phones became a big cause of driving accidents and eventually became banned. In extreme cases, cell phones could distract people from work or important jobs. It was also found to cause brain cancer especially to children that are still developing.

Another piece of technology that is very big today would be gaming systems. Examples like Mircosoft XBox, Sony PlayStation, and Nintendo GameCube are systems built for gaming played on a TV. Portable devices like the GameBoy, Nintendo DS, and the PSP are for gaming on the go. Of course, the purpose of these machines is for entertainment but once again something good comes with something bad. Games are also a distraction and addiction is a big problem. Games also can turn something unrealistic to almost real. This makes them sometimes spread an unreal picture of things like events in history or current issues in today's society. Online play can also be dangerous. Players could type messages to each other and even voice chat with each other. This was made for easy communication between players but it could also be used for insulting or bullying people. Games are fun, if you could avoid these things that are out of your control.

Speaking of text messaging and voice chatting, messaging programs are a big plus and minus to people these days. The advantages are obvious. Instant communication through the Internet widely replaced phones and mail. Whether it is for business, family or friends, the world seemed a whole lot smaller. Once again, it is time for the negative side of text messaging programs like MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ, AIM, Xfire, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, and Windows Messenger that comes with Windows. As said before, text messaging could be used for bullying or "cyber bullying". Other than just bullying, Internet stalkers always pose a threat to children using the program. Many children were kidnapped or killed for believing messages sent to them. Thirty-year-old adults could pretend to be children to try to draw them out of their houses. Besides the more serious matter, some other problems are affecting children like proper spelling and grammar. Text messengers usually use shortcuts and abbreviations to cut down the time to type a message. Proper capitalizing or punctuation is usually ignored. Replacement of letters with symbols or numbers like replacing "E" with a 3 doesn't help shorten the time to type the message but it makes the message look "cooler" but also make your spelling skills "stinkier".

Well, those are the three big, good and evil pieces of technology I want to talk about (I’ll never write a post that long again). So, go ahead and comment on what you think.
